Course Description

Throughout the year, we will get to know different kinds of writing, reading, speaking and people. A lot of what we do in the English Language Arts classroom is all about communicating with each other about texts and ideas, and so we will learn how to do so clearly and respectfully. As we learn about ideas, texts, and people, we will also learn about language. Part of our course focuses on academic language and Standard Academic English grammar. However, another part of our course focuses on the value and use of different dialects, which are forms of language that reflect the culture of a certain group.

Course Goals:

Students will be able to:

  • Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis
  • Analyze complex characters, their interactions with other characters, and their role in plot advancement
  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text and analyze the cumulative impact of specific work of choices of meaning and tone
  • Analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums
  • Read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems
  • Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence
  • Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts and information, clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content
  • Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured even sequences.
  • Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including self-generated question) or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate and synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences

Course Texts

  • Of Mice and Men -Steinbeck
  • The Odyssey (Book 1) –Homer
  • Fallen Angels –Walter Dean Myers
  • The Lottery –Shirley Jackson
  • Lady or the Tiger –Frank Stockton
  • Lord of the Flies –William Golding
  • Flowers for Algernon –Daniel Keyes
  • Romeo and Juliet –William Shakespeare
  • To Kill a Mockingbird –Harper Lee

Classroom Policies:

I expect all students to be in class on time, ( if not a few minutes early when possible) with all of their supplies. Students should never have electronic devices out unless they have permission to use them. Additionally, we will all create our classroom rules at the beginning of the year, meaning that I expect all students to abide by school rules as well as the specific guidelines that we set.

  • Late work: Though I expect all students to turn in all assignments on time, I also know that things happen. Therefore, I accept late work until the end of each quarter with a slight penalty depending on the assignment. All students will get several notices if they are missing work, and they will also be notified about when the last day to turn in work is consistently each term.
  • Making up tests/quizzes: Students, if you’re absent on the day of a test or quiz, you need to schedule an appointment with me to make up the test or quiz as soon as possible. You can schedule an appointment to me in person or over email. I’m available at lunch and after school.
  • If you’re absent: Check the website to see what you missed. If you have additional questions, talk to a peer first. Then, if you still have questions, please email me or stop by my room and I will be happy to provide clarification.

Diversity

It is the policy of Monterey High School to support and value diversity. To do so requires that we:

  • respect the dignity and essential worth of all individuals;
  • promote a culture of respect throughout our community;
  • respect the privacy, property, and freedom of others;
  • reject bigotry, discrimination, violence, or intimidation of any kind;
  • practice personal and academic integrity and expect it from others;
  • and promote the diversity of opinions, ideas and backgrounds which is the lifeblood of the school.

Mandatory Reporting

English 9 Honors Homethoughtfull English Dub

MHS employees, including faculty and staff are mandatory reporters of child abuse when the employee has “reasonable cause to believe any child with whom the employee comes in contact has suffered abuse or that any person with whom the employee comes in contact has abused a child.” All employees, including faculty and staff, also are mandatory reporters of prohibited discrimination when the employee obtains “credible evidence that any form of prohibited discrimination by or against students, faculty or staff is occurring.” “Prohibited discrimination” includes discrimination, and discriminatory harassment, including sexual harassment and sexual assault. This statement is to advise you that that your disclosure of information about child abuse or prohibited discrimination to a MHS employee may trigger the MHS employee’s duty to report that information to the designated authorities.
